First Presentation

Didn't have much time to rehearse the content.

I just got notification of schedule change 4 days before. Piuh.. at last it's over. I successfully made the crowd over excited of the presentation. And, they got me brother.

It's been a while I realized that there are many differences between our culture and western culture. And one of the differences is about the structure of a seminar, especially in Q&A session. It doesn't have a rigid structure, that is, there is no turn-based style. If in Indonesia we will divide it into a sequence of turns (raise hand, ask question, answer), Western culture doesn't seem like that. They're more dynamic. It's just like an informal discussion done in formal manner. Sometimes, the answer of a question doesn't come from the presenter. Someone could answer without any authorization from the presenter. And, someone could easily sound he/she idea/question without even raising his/her hand first.

You can imagine that when you are facing over excited audience. I got many questions at once. After I had finished my presentation, the Q&A session began. A lady asked me about a definition, then she told about what her experience, then another lady nodded the experience, then she asked another question. Before I answered those questions, someone said: "Yea, I'm very interested in knowing (he was talking another issue), what's your opinion?". Then, another guy made a point and answered some of the points being questioned. Suddenly, a very interesting discussion (yea I called it discussion rather than Q&A) was stopped and all the eyes were looking at me. O well, I even hardly wrote those questions since they were coming like a wind. I was speechless at that time didn't know what I should answer. But I knew it I should make a sound. At least make a sound. Hahah... funny isn't it, when you don't know what you should tell, then your mind is telling you to make a sound, at least they will hear something from you. Fortunately, I remembered one of those questions. Since I was quite desperate in following this session, I used a technical terms. Eventually, they stopped asking. Yea yea, I know it's not good, I should have been more honest. Wondering whether I can do the presentation well in international forum. Geez, I should start practicing now.

I suggest you practice your presentation like someone who are sharing his thoughts to his friends. It is the way of the modern thinking, to have a meeting just as personal as ever. It's the trend of today's culture.

Mmm... yes, that's the point, even a child can have a heavy argument with his/her mom or dad. But, it's all about freedom of expressing idea.

I heard from one of my friends coming from Malaysia. She did her Bachelor here, and then came back to Malaysia. And her father even couldn't recognize her due to her argument that sounds offending to her dad, but she didn't mean it.
