Is AntiVirus really needed ?

Recently, I'm getting annoyed with my mcafee antivirus. The problem comes from a dialog box popping-up when my laptop starts. Yes, my laptop is delivered with McAfee AntiVirus 30-day-trial edition. At first, I didn't give much attention to this av. However, It's very annoying when the trial period ended. The dialog box saying that my subscription has ended pops every time the system starts. The main problem is, the dialog box load time is so long that affects overall startup time. Hence, I have to wait longer.

Having distracted by this annoying message, I decided to uninstall the software and find another one. Yep, there are many options I got. Starting from AVG Free, Avast, Panda, ClamWin to none . However, i'm still questioning myself whether I should install an AV or not. Since, I am not like a dump that opens every files I downloaded. Suspicious file will be erased.In addition, I don't use outlook and IE. FireFox is enough for me.

Another good story I got from this link . It is said that for the next windows version, Vista, there will be a thought competition between AVs themself and also, Microsoft. Microsoft has Windows Defender. I have a strong feeling that they -Microsoft- are going to fight in this field too. With this condition, there is a possibility that all AVs except Windows Defender will be less stable. Yep, I believe to win this battle, Vista and Windows Defender are enough. Then, the conclusion is in the future there will be other problems coming from other AVs.

In addition, the link describes about ClamWin compatibility with Windows Vista too. I think, I'll take this lightweight AV if I decide to use AV for guarding my laptop.
